Davy Van Den Bremt: Share your Mollom stats

Drupal planet - Fri, 21/05/2010 - 19:15

A was just sent out on Mollom's Twitter account to help them spread the word on Mollom. Since I've been an extremely satisfied user of this (free) anti-spam service for about 2 years now, I immediately added a link back to them in the footer of this blog. But I decided that's not enough. So I'd like to start a little meme here.

If you're happy about Mollom, just shout it out on Twitter, Facebook, your blog, ... by putting up a screenshot of your stats and saying how many spam has been caught by Mollom. You can find the stats of your site on your Mollom account. If you're using Drupal, you can find them under Administer > Reports > Mollom Statistics.

If you're using Twitter, use the hashtag #mollomstats. I'm looking forward see how much crap content Mollom has spared us from.

I'll give the example by being the first...

News Corp. flabbergasted anyone could oppose "three strikes"

Ars technica law & order - Fri, 21/05/2010 - 19:03

Rupert Murdoch's son James runs News Corp.'s sprawling operations in Europe and Asia, and he's had it with the search engines, consumer electronics companies, and users who want access to his company's content without paying a "fair contribution."

In a speech this week to University College London (home to Jeremy Bentham's bizarre "auto-icon"), where Murdoch oversaw the opening of a new Centre for Digital Humanities, he expressed his astonishment that anyone could object to such absolutely ripping ideas as Internet disconnections for copyright infringement.

RapidShare didn't infringe on copyrights, says US court

Ars technica law & order - Fri, 21/05/2010 - 18:01

The US District Court of California denied adult entertainment company Perfect 10's request for an injunction against file-sharing service RapidShare on Thursday, saying that the company did not offer sufficient proof that RapidShare itself had infringed on Perfect 10's copyrights.

Perfect 10 filed its lawsuit against RapidShare in late 2009, alleging that the Germany-based service illegally hosted the company's images for its members to distribute and download. Since P10 is a for-pay service, it argued that RapidShare was violating its distribution rights and making money off of its stolen content due to RapidShare's affiliate program that pays members for referring new users.

Google says "Thanks, Apple!" as $750M AdMob deal approved

Ars technica law & order - Fri, 21/05/2010 - 17:11

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has closed its investigation into the $750 million Google/AdMob buyout and given a green light to the deal. The reason is simple: Apple, Apple, and more Apple.

In its official statement (PDF), the FTC mentions "Apple" 10 times in a page and half, all because of Apple's own decision to launch a mobile ad network called iAd.

"The Commission reached this decision based on important developments in the mobile advertising marketplace, particularly actions by Apple that should mitigate the anticompetitive effects of Google’s AdMob acquisition," said the FTC. The vote in favor of closing the investigation was 5-0.

The Commission had been concerned over Google's dominance in online ads; purchasing one of the big iPhone ad players would have extended that dominance into the mobile space. Apple's announcement changes the game, though: "As a result of Apple’s entry, AdMob’s success to date on the iPhone platform is unlikely to be an accurate predictor of AdMob’s competitive significance going forward, whether AdMob is owned by Google or not. This is particularly important given that AdMob’s revenue and market share are derived largely from the iPhone platform."

Google, which has of late taken to publicly calling for quick action on the deal and vowed to fight a negative ruling, was predictably thrilled. "The decision is great news for the mobile advertising ecosystem as a whole," said the company in a statement today. "As mobile phone usage increases, growth in mobile advertising is only going to accelerate. This benefits mobile developers and publishers who will get better advertising solutions, marketers who will find new ways to reach consumers, and users who will get better ads and more free content."

Over at AdMob, CEO Omar Hamoui said that he was "extremely pleased with today’s decision from the Federal Trade Commission to clear Google’s acquisition of AdMob. Over the past six months we've received a great deal of support from across the mobile industry—and we deeply appreciate it. Our focus is now on working with the team at Google to quickly close the deal."

Commerce Guys: Virtual Views 7.x-3.x Sprint, May 24-28

Drupal planet - Fri, 21/05/2010 - 15:53

Views 3 is currently in active development on Drupal 6 with a forward port to Drupal 7 spearheaded by Daniel Wehner (dereine) of erdfisch. It goes without saying that Daniel’s work to bring a solid Views 3 release to Drupal 7 is monumental, especially as the Drupal 7 release date draws nearer. However, there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Next week, May 24-28, 2010, Damien Tournoud of Commerce Guys will be joining Daniel in an ad hoc virtual Views sprint. Each developer will be setting aside 20 or more hours for the week to knock out as many issues as possible in the Views 3 issue tracker. We’d love to see other individuals and companies depending on Views for building Drupal sites join in for the next week in the virtual sprint facilitated through the #drupal-views channel on irc.freenode.net.

Open Source Catholic: Set a View's Context Inside an Organic Group

Drupal planet - Fri, 21/05/2010 - 15:42

A very simple way to allow a view to display as if it were a page in an organic group on your Drupal site: Simply paste the code below in your view's Header or Footer, using the PHP Code input format.

<?php
og_set_group_context(node_load(46405));
?>

Note: the node ID inside node_load() must be set to the group into which you'd like the view to display. To get this to function perfectly (as of OG 2.1), you might need to apply the patch in this issue on drupal.org: Group theme doesn't display on Views that take group as an argument. (Otherwise the group's custom theme might not get set).

There are some alternative methods to getting views to display inside groups, but this is a quick and easy solution.
